Uncovering Foods That Can Help You Get Pregnant

By Peter Skonctue

Down through the ages, advice and tips have been given to women on what foods will help them get pregnant. This has caused many hopeful mothers-to-be rushing off to eat whatever has been advised. Actually, women fall pregnant everyday without a thought to what they are eating. But many do swear by some foods they call fertility boosters.

Oysters - Almost everyone knows how oysters are aphrodisiacs. What they may not know though is they are fertility boosters also. This is because they are packed full of zinc, a very important nutrient if you want to conceive. A woman that lacks zinc has a disruptive menstrual cycle and the production of eggs is slow. If slurping oysters is not your thing, you can get zinc in chicken, beef, nuts, eggs, and dairy products too.

Citrus fruits - Vitamin C is essential in increasing your chances of conceiving. It is also vital for women who take fertility medications and even helps women with ovulation problems by improving their fertility. Even men can benefit as vitamin C keeps their sperm from clumping together. Antioxidants found in vitamin C are one of the keys of falling pregnant, especially if you are a smoker hoping to conceive.

One thing many look forward to at Thanksgiving is the yams. Now, those trying to conceive have another reason to enjoy those Thanksgiving yams. Researchers believe that there may be ovulation-stimulating substances in yams. They offer as proof the fact that many women who consume wild yams seem to have a much higher rate of twins than those who do not. Even though store bought ones are not wild, they still have lot of fertility-friendly vitamins and just may be the key to conceiving.

Lean meats - Your lean meats such as turkey, chicken, and beef are all ideal sources for iron. Iron is an important nutrient in boosting fertility. Women who have a good iron level conceive easier than those who are iron-deficient. The one drawback to lean meats is that too much animal protein can actually decrease fertility. Eating only three servings a week is a good rule, and one serving can be replaced with beans or tofu.

Packed full of antioxidants to protect the body from cell damage and cell aging, berries are essential in conception. Protecting cells in the body includes the eggs. Blueberries and raspberries top the list as the best in berries. However, blackberries and strawberries are fertility-friendly also. These are perfect to snack on, in desserts, and as toppings in the morning.

With the good, always comes the bad. While there is fertility boosting foods, there is also fertility busting ones. Trans fat has another mark against it, as studies have shown that a diet high in trans fat increases the chances of ovulatory infertility in women. Caffeine, in all forms, is another big bust. Too much caffeine has been linked to lower fertility. Cut down on coffee, strong tea, and even chocolate.

Filling up on fertility boosting foods to get pregnant is a great idea because you cannot lose. They are healthy foods with a promise, and are helping you give your body the best chance possible not only to conceive, but in preparing the body to carry a baby. A balanced and nutritious diet prepregnancy is important, so it makes sense to eat fertility friendly foods.
